I was wrong -

In the interest of transparency, I must admit that I misinterpreted a quote from Jon Entine that appeared in a recent article critical of socially responsible investing in the Washington Post. Mr. Entine responded to me swiftly and in no uncertain terms made it clear that he felt personally attacked by some of my comments. While I believe that he and I have some fundamental disagreements in philosophy, he (as is any human being) is entitled to respectful dialogue and debate. Therefore, I have removed the offending post and replaced it with this one (since things tend to live on in cyberspace).

If you return to this blog, and I hope you do, please accept my appology for misrepresenting your position but more importantly for the portions that you found personally offensive. No offense was meant.

Thomas L. Friedman (no relation) makes the point that increasingly savvy consumers recognize that they are investing with their dollars with every purchasing decision. Likewise, I believe that increasingly savvy investors realize that when they invest in companies or funds, they are actively supporting those businesses.

Socially responsible investing may be an inexact science (yes, it's true, Enron was once their darling) but that by no means invalidates the concept. Thankfully, we have a market economy. So, as increasing numbers of investors seek to put their money in responsible investments, those investments will have to get better and better at ensuring that they provide support for their investors' personal economic, social and environmental 'pillars.'

Because savvy investors watch the results of their investments.
